Thomson and van Eck - Consulting Engineers - was formed in March 1970 with the objective of providing project management and multi-disciplined engineering expertise in the fields of Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering. Shortly after commencement of operations, the importance of maintaining tight financial control of projects was recognised, which resulted in the addition of quantity surveying to the company’s capabilities.
Expansion into neighboring and overseas markets resulted in the formation of the International Division of Thomson and van Eck in 1985.

The Company has participated in a wide range of projects varying in both technical complexity and size, including many projects for major South African organisations. In early years the majority of projects were related to industrial and mining developments, but since 1982 commercial projects such as office, residential, retail and hotel developments have featured prominently in the workload of the company.
The following additional areas of expertise are available:
- Processes for water and effluent treatment, as well as combustion technology.
- Consulting and contract engineering for exploration and development of natural resources including coal bed methane and petroleum.
The Company operates from company owned offices in Johannesburg, which has been planned to provide flexibility to meet the changing demands of the engineering industry.

The Company is a registered member of The South African Association of Consulting Engineers, which is affiliated to the “Federation Internationale Des Ingenieurs Conseils” (FIDIC).
